What is the Sea of Faith? Where is the movement going? For a UK perspective with extensive reference to the original Sea of Faith BBC series, check out The Sea of Faith – The Quest Goes On.

The Melbourne branch of the Sea of Faith in Australia (SoFiA) commenced in the year 2000 following a symposium at St Michael's Uniting Church at which the keynote speakers were Don Cupitt and Prof. David Tacey. This Christian background, with its fixation on Jesus, eventually developed by a process of questioning, doubting and seeking, to Jesus being considered by Melbourne SoFiA as merely human - albeit, a great human. But if Jesus was human, then what about the ideas of the other great humans: i.e. Buddha, Zoroaster, Confucius, Muhammad, etc.? As well as the great philosophers. And what about Humanism, Atheism, Feminism, Environmentalism, etc.? So the quest by Melbourne SoFiA gradually developed from the search for spirituality, to that of the search for meaning.
